Diet and Lifestyle Advice for Psoriasis with Lianne Campbell
As it is Psoriasis Action Month, we are delighted to introduce Lianne Campbell MSc, an author, blogger and podcaster who is passionate about diet and lifestyle intervention for psoriasis. We often hear from customers suffering from psoriasis that our Dead Sea salts help to soothe and nourish their skin, so we were really interested in Lianne’s research. We asked her a few questions to find out about her work and her belief in the benefits of bath salts.
Why did you choose to focus on psoriasis as a topic for research?
I cleared my psoriasis with diet and lifestyle changes, after 18 years of being told these changes would have no impact. I became fascinated by the emerging developments in research into the human microbiome, and focused much of my MSc in Digital Marketing on exploring, researching and sharing information online about the power of food, physical activity and lifestyle changes in treating skin conditions. I also focused on the important role the human microbiome plays in our health. Fuel for Health (https://www.fuelforhealth.co.uk/) was born and I started a Biome Blog and podcast called Gutted. My new eBook 10 Powerful Steps to Clearing Psoriasis explores the emerging research into the human microbiome and the impact on our health and in particular skin conditions, such as psoriasis.
What drove you to create your website and blog?
I wanted to help people with psoriasis. I wanted to make sure they got the most up-to-date research and information about their condition, and I wanted them to have options about their treatment. After 18 years getting the wrong, or inaccurate, advice and guidance about my condition from ‘experts’, I was keen to ensure people got the whole story and understood more about what is happening in their bodies. Personally, I felt helpless, depressed and desperate when my psoriasis was bad and I didn’t want anyone else to feel like that when they have the power to change things.
Do you think bath salts can play a part in skin health?
I believe two of the most powerful tools for clearing your skin are water and salts. As with alkaline and mineral-rich diets, they provide the body with health-giving minerals and alter the environment in the body for a healthy microbial balance.
Part of a quick recovery from psoriasis is regular salt baths to increase your magnesium levels and bypass the digestive system. Salt bathing floods the body with vital minerals - magnesium, sulphur, iodine, sodium, calcium, potassium, bromine – which can be lacking in psoriasis patients due to dysbiosis or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. One of the quickest and easiest ways to do this is through bathing.
What do you find most rewarding about your job?
Changing people’s lives - people who thought they were stuck with their lot; people who think psoriasis is for life - the same way other people with psoriasis changed my life, by having the confidence to share their stories and experience online and demonstrate the impact of diet and lifestyle intervention. I think there are now 15,000 people on the Psoriasis Healing Warriors Facebook page started by Matt Ludwig. It’s truly inspirational.
If you could share one piece of advice what would it be?
Educate yourself: be the expert of your body and your own health. There is so much we do not know. If someone can’t tell you what is causing something, they can’t tell you how to cure it.
